The Greatest Show on Earth

2010 is a special year, a year that will go down in history. Politics, religion, crisis events, and war-like behavior will all be apparent. When countries cheer and boo at each other, when people have sudden spiritual moments, and when individuals punish each other on a field of battle, this is when one knows they are watching something special. Something that is remembered for all time by the young and old. This is the 19th FIFA World Cup.

From across the world players are gathering in South Africa to represent their countries. Some of these players are the best the world of soccer has to offer, while others are simply trying to make a name for themselves. However, one common thing they all share is a desire to win, to lift the golden trophy aloft and proudly say to the world “Our country is the best!”. This event happens every four years, and for the first time ever the tournament will be hosted in an African country. Many concerns were expressed after South Africa won the rights to host, everything from crime rate, to transportation, to venues, and the people of South Africa have constantly been there to prove the world wrong. The country has come together to address many of these issues, by ramping up security, constructing spectacular stadiums, and promising an awesome event. All that is needed now is for the players to take to the field and battle it out to determine who will be the world’s number one.
To all of you wondering, my name is Derek Rhoades. I’m an unemployed soccer obsessed fan from the United States who is creating this blog to document every step of the World Cup. Each group and every game will be analyzed. I will offer criticism and praise for each team, and try to give all you readers out there my view on the current matches. I may not be right all the time, I may make some of you love me, and some of you hate me, so leave comments on each post to voice your own opinion and I will respond as appropriate.
Welcome to my blog on the World Cup, I hope you all stay to find it exciting and insightful as we root for our teams and players.

  1. It's a bear trying to build traffic on a new blog - doesn't mean you're not a good writer. That intro blurb shows more than a little potential!
